Boss Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay PS-3

More images:

The Boss Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay PS-3 contains both a pitch shifter and a delay. There is seven pitch shift modes, and three delay modes as well as an expression mode. The pitch shift level is selectable in 26 steps - 24 chromatic steps over a +/- 1 octave range plus 2-octave up-down capability. The delay is up to a maximum of 2000 ms. The PS-3 is a very 'digital' sounding pedal.

  • Very cool and fun pedal, I've gotten a lot of use out of it. None of the delay modes are anything to rave about, but I certainly use them from time to time when I just need another delay in the chain. But the many pitch-shifting modes are great, especially to have all this in such a compact little box. The normal pitch-shift modes are good enough, doing some nice damage to any sound, but the dual pitch shift modes are the truly brilliant part, with the interaction of the middle two knobs creating some truly twisted effects. My only complaint is that sometimes in the single pitch-shift modes, the device has a few distinctive sounds that it occasionally seems to spit out regardless of what's being fed in. Otherwise, a very versatile and useful pedal.
  • Good Points: -multiple modes -great sound
  • Bad Points: -can be easy to spot in a mix because of its sometimes distinctive sound

  • A favorite pedal of mine. I only ever use it on setting 10. Setting 10: Wet/Dry knob = self explanatory. The two middle knobs can both be set to different pitches of the original signal. So you then have three pitches of the original signal with the wet/dry set at 12 o'clock. The pitch shifting on this pedal is great though. I've owned or tried all of the Octave series and they all do strange things trying to track the signal. This thing when set to the highest pitches can sound a little funny, but overall creates very realistic variants of the original signal. Features in the middle settings include some pitch/delay combinations. Like a pitch scale up with delay on it. These can be fun but mainly only take certain sounds/aproaches well. Then the last three are different (short) delays. I've actually used this as a delay live before, but only as an afterthought. Has line in for an expression pedal so if you have feet you could give that a go. Never used the stereo outs before, and now all of a sudden I'm wondering why they're even there! Maybe each pitch one goes out A and pitch 2 B!? (that's what I'd like at least). I'll have to fool with that. I'm betting that there are some mono signal to stereo delays on here....
  • Good Points: Setting #'s 9-11.

  • I love this pedal. I specifically searched for it for a long time. Yes, it does the whammy style pitch shift thing, and yes, it sounds out of tune. But if you want a whammy style pitch shift, get a whammy pedal. The thing that makes this pedal (and it's younger brother the PS-2) unique is the group of pitch/delay settings, which pitch shift, then delay, then re-shift the delayed signal, etc. So one sound send into this pedal will feed back and rise in pitch at the same time. It's beautiful. Then if you team it up with a pedal like Effector 13's Truly Beautiful Disaster to put it in a feedback loop, you can further extend this effect. Also: The dual pitch-shift modes are wonderful as well. A single synthesizer note turns into dissonant triads of sound that you can control with a single twist of a finger.
  • Good Points: Boss construction. So yeah. Stereo! Dual pitch shift Pitch shift and delay feed back into each other, making cascading sheets of sound
  • Bad Points: The whammy effect is kinda off kilter, but that's not nescessarily a bad thing. If you want a clear whammy pitch shift, again, get a whammy pedal.

  • Ok pedal but not great. I am using this with an expression pedal whammy style, and the octave up sound seems to always sound out of tune and tremolo'd. wierd. it has some really cool prog modes. sounds nice fed back into itself.
  • Good Points: boss construction. some really cool modes
  • Bad Points: The whammy impersonation

  • Wow this rocks my world, so much to do with it and it responds to all my tweekings. Every setting brings out a new sound and I can go from ambient to harsh noise with just a click on the mode knob. In a chain of effects this is essential and it can be placed in all kind of positions and you can still have great control over the sound.
  • Good Points: Everything about this is great.
  • Bad Points: Maybe a bit ugly due to all the text on it.

  • As far as pitch shifting pedals go, this is by far the best I've used. 3 delay modes, which I never use so can't really comment on (though the same settings as on the RV-3), settings 4-7 are single pitch shift (pitch knob A controls feedback), 8-10 dual, and 11 is the whammy thing w/ an expression pedal. I mainly use it in a line loop in modes 6 & 7, it really nails the thick rumbling noise thing, and by sweeping the B pitch back and forth you can get some nasty sounding stuff. One day I'll have to make use of the dual output and pitch mode by connecting another line of effects, but my rig is already pretty damn complicated. My biggest complaint is that most of the time any setting in the + octave range sounds somewhat cheesy, though mixing more of the straight signal in kinda covers it up. Versatile effect which I find essential to my sound.
  • Good Points: 11 modes of pitch shift and delay, easy to get thick, rumbling noise
  • Bad Points: + octave range sounds cheesy most of the time, replaced by the inferior PS-5 and becoming scarce

  • Very versatile pedal. Just a few minutes of experimentation will show the many sounds you can coax from this thing. Great in feedback loops, or to process a sound source further. The Inverse mode is pretty cool, though better other experimentation than harsh noise. All other modes work great for harsh noise. Adjusting the delay time in delay modes does not effect the pitch of the sound, just the tempo. The other reviews below are right on.
  • Good Points: see review
  • Bad Points: Would like to have a more 'analog' styled delay mode that effects the pitch and tempo when adjusting the delay time. Other than that, it's perfect.

  • This thing kicks ass. You can get some of the sickest noises I have ever heard out of it. Sounds especially good with a theremin. I think alec empire did his entire generation star wars album with the ps-3 and a drum machine. This pedal is perfect for noise/experimental music.
  • Good Points: long delay time, various awesome pitch shift modes, sturdy.
  • Bad Points: some of the pitch shift modes sound cheesy, but that can also be a good point

  • This thing is one of my favorite pedals, well first it has two seperate pitch shifting knobs that used in combination with the stereo outputs can produce wonderful results. For example you can send a high pitch through output A, and a low pitch through output B, and have those going into seperate individual FX to produce some fantastic multiple layering abilities. Next is the strangest one, it has a effect in that "inverts" the original sound that produces a strange reversed like effect, with an added bonus to it, it has a echo/delay type effect that slowly decays toward the pitch you have set it to. For example, if you have the pitch knob set at a higher pitch then make a noise, it will start from the point you have it set at and slowly work its way higher, and vice versa. very bizzare. Plus it has a 2sec to 100ms delay with some LONG repeats to it that last forever. All in all this a great pedal with some amazing modulation effects that I have heard nowhere else, And works very well alone or in combination with other pedals.
