Danelectro Black Coffee DJ-21

Danelectro Black Coffee DJ-21

The Danelectro Black Coffee DJ-21 is a high gain distortion unit with controls for bass and treble. For such a small pedal, this thing deals out some serious gritty distortion.

  • I got this in a lot of 3 Dano pedals, and it's a great buy for how much I paid altogether. It's a step up up from Danelectro FAB Metal distortion because you have control over the High and Low EQ sections, instead of a single Tone knob. The downside is there's no Gain knob, only the level, high and low. Great budget distortion with more flexibility, and a different sound from the FAB pedal. This pedal can get *very* thin and raspy... It could be *the* "Volnutt"... Definitley not the best, but not nearly the worst!
  • Good Points: More tonally flexible than the FAB Metal, has a good variety of sounds for what it is.
  • Bad Points: Pretty average for a metal distortion, but with more tweakability than other Danelectro "Metal" distortions. No gain control. Wiggly knobs...

  • Cheap little pedal with a pretty basic sound. Nice pretty harsh distortion.
  • Good Points: Turn the treble all the way up for a screeching demon inside your feedback loop.
  • Bad Points: Basic danelectro stuff aka those damnec knobs.

  • Ahhh the mini series, I tried to stay away from these things just from look alone but finally gave in for a pawn buy and I was a little more than impressed. Black Coffee is a slightly above average metal distortion. Bass and treble knobs give for a little tweaking. Stay away if this is gonna be the main distortion in your set up, but definately a nice cheap little add on for some extra crunch.
  • Good Points: - Good heavy distortion
  • Bad Points: - Knobs are to small - Cheap looking construction

  • This was my first Dano pedal, and what people said is true: they feature some pretty cheap construction. What's up with those knobs and the switch? Mine works great now, but I am concerned about how long it will hold up. Other than that, this is a nice sounding distortion. It says "metal distortion" on it. I think this sounds metallic, but not necessarily in terms of musically: it has a ringy quality with a top end buzz that makes it sound like your speakers are made of metal. It interacts well with other distortions: for instance, I tried mine with a Rat 2 and a Corrosion in a chain, and the tones combined very well together.
  • Good Points: Harsh, metallic sounding distortion.
  • Bad Points: Cheap construction.

  • Black Coffee is nice little distortion pedal. it has a real harsh metal-type of distortion. its small so it doesn't take up alot of room and only has level, bass and treble knobs so its easy to use. if you need a little extra distortion in your noise. black coffee will do.
  • Good Points: its small, easy to use(like most distortions) good sound, killer distortion
  • Bad Points: haven't found any yet
