Danelectro Surf and Turf DJ-9

Danelectro Surf and Turf DJ-9

The Danelectro Surf and Turf DJ-9 is a a straight forward compressor pedal that can dampen the peak signals and boost the quieter signals. You can adjust the output level either louder for some boost, equal for compression only, or quieter. The sensitivity knob controls the amount of compression. Truly a no-nonsense compressor! Operates with either a standard 9-volt DC barrel type negative center power adapter or a standard 9-volt battery.

  • As a musician who primarily makes noise-punk and experimental improv, this is my secret weapon. I leave the knobs all the way up and it does exactly what a compressor is not supposed to do, feeds back. But the truly great thing about it is that it gives you instant feedback without increasing volume. Although this pedal is really a one-trick pony (unless others have found a good use for it), it offers an easily manipulatable sound. Definitely worth the money.
  • Good Points: Great instant feedback without increasing volume. Very cheap.
  • Bad Points: A bit fragile, the knobs WILL break off eventually but, hell, you might as well break them off turned all the way up anyway. My first one lasted me six years and it was well worth it to buy a second one.

  • Got this in an eBay lot with three other Dano pedals... It makes a budget compressor! Doesn't have much in the way of features, but if you need a simple leveling effect for the end of your chain or after a loop, this will work very well. Very useful "accessory" pedal... It's not a drastic effect, but still very functional.
  • Good Points: Great, cheap leveler... Boosts low sounds, cuts the loud ones, the result is a more even output volume (no amp-blowing volume spikes or overly-extreme drops from weaker distortions). I like the tacky aquamarine color...
  • Bad Points: Shitty Danelectro knobs. Can definitley introduce some unwanted hiss, does not feature attack or decay knobs (though I don't need them personally), It will color your signal somewhat by cutting out certain frequencies, but this is easily remedied with an EQ pedal after it in the chain. Not great for tweaking outside a loop... It's more of a "set it and forget it" effect.
