Electro Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer

Electro Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer

The EH Mini-Synthesizer features one analog VCO with a Pulse waveform. There is an octave divider and dedicated LFO for a Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) effect. There's a rather quirky analog filter onboard too. Two sliders control the cutoff-point at the start and end of a tone, another slider controls the sweep rate between them and the fourth slider adjusts phase-shifting of the filter. Resonance, phase in/out and sensitivity are handled by on/off switches. Finally it also has a 2x switch which also creates a phase-shifter effect.

  • A very rare piece indeed. You never see them for sale in pawn shops or E-bay. I bought mine from Ambient music composer Mark Jenkins for 0. This Monophonic synth contains everything for making screeching highs to lows that will leave you feeling violated. This unit can run off two 9v batteries so it's very portable (even has a built-in speaker). The keyboard is a membrane type like the WASP from EDP, not velocity sensative, but does have a Piezo unit that "feels" the strength of your fingers hitting the board that changes the sound slightly (more mellow sounding). The keyboard tracking is very fast, but the "Keys" are thinner than conventional keyboards that could pose a problem for people with wider fingers. The unit itself contains a single Oscillator with a Sub for beefing up the sound (Juno-106 style). Filters includes One VCO (Pulse), a "Q" switch, a 2x filter switch (steps up the filters one octave), and controls for a very unconventional Portamento. Other controls include a Master volume switch and power (no power LED, whoops). If you ever come across one of these, pick it up. You may never see another one again.
  • Good Points: Thick Bass to screaming highs, very easy to program, a very unique sounding and Looking synth, portable.
  • Bad Points: Some people might have trouble playing the small keyboard, not the best outer-construction (Plastic case with cardboard backing)
