MXR Doubleshot Distortion M151

MXR Doubleshot Distortion M151

With 2 distinct channels, huge output, and quiet operation, the MXR Doubleshot Distortion M151 redefines what a distortion box should be. From sludgy bottom-heavy distortion to screechy grind, this pedal delivers. Each channel has 3 equalization controls as well as a FOCUS button that gives you a whole new sound pallette to work with. The stomp switch on the right switches between each of the two distortion channels.

  • This pedal is one of the most versatile distortions I have owned. It's two distortions combined, each with a three band EQ, gain, and volume. The top channel is a "Dime" distortion, and the bottom a "Classic Fuzz" both of which MXR still makes. The Top channel features a mid-cut button, which produces a very metal sound, the bottom distortion has an extra button which tightens the bass. The best thing about this pedal is the EQ response. You can get many different radical and experimental sounds by messing with the EQ, especially with the fuzz distortion (try dimeing the mids and the gain on the fuzz, and cutting the bass almost all the way out if your into face melting shred!). The top distortion is very clean with the mid-cut button on, and can sound kind of vintage otherwise. One drawback for me with this pedal has always been that the top channel, at least where I live (near a radio station) has always had a problem with RF. Another downside of this baby is that it's really either all or nothing with the distortions, neither one has much to offer in the way of cleaner tones in my opinion.
  • Good Points: Cheap as dirt used. EQ is super responsive. Good analog sound.
  • Bad Points: Had some problems with RF. Needs 18 volt adapter.

  • The best feature of this pedal is obvious. It allows you to quickly switch from distortion #1 to distortion #2. A whole world of quick tone changes waits in this pedal, although that world is pretty small. Nothing too special with the two distortions (not to say that they are bad distortions) but the key here is that you quickly cut from one to the other. Enough EQ to create some screeching or droning tones in a feedback loop.
  • Good Points: Double shot.
  • Bad Points: Read review.
