DOD Super American Metal FX56-B

DOD Super American Metal FX56-B

The DOD Super American Metal FX56-B is a turbo-charged version of the American Metal FX-56 distortion pedal with the addition of a BASS knob. This makes this high gain distortion extra useful to get anywhere from bass that rumbles and highs that screech and squeal.

  • Totally different beast to the original American Metal. Much smoother, louder and bass heavy. Less idiosyncratic it that way. It's comparable to other DOD high gains so if you've already got a few of those I'm not sure that this would adds much, but useful if you need something to push your signal.
  • Good Points: Loud, useful high gain. Tone controls nice and expressive when used in pedal chains.
  • Bad Points: Not much different (smoother perhaps) to some other high gains in the DOD range but depends on your need. Difficult to find in the UK at least, so prices can get silly.

  • I really love this pedal. I've had it for about 10 years, and out 7 distortion pedals, it's my go-to pedal.
  • Good Points: I can get my favorite players sounds by tweaking the bass, presence and distortion.
  • Bad Points: I bought it used, so of course the battery cover was missing (but a little duct tape never hurt anyone). And 2 years ago I had to clean out the contacts for the pedal. But I still love this pedal.

  • Another useful high gain DOD distortion.... this thing's tone was actually a lot smoother than I was expecting, but it's still much rougher than the Boss Metal Zone, to which it makes an interesting alternative. You can get some pretty momentous bass out of this thing, that's what i'm mainly using it for right now
  • Good Points: - Very high gain. - High bass response. - Cheap.
  • Bad Points: - Usual DOD construction complaints.

  • I've recently been using this a lot more and I used to dislike it a fair bit, but I've discovered it can be a great addition to a chain. I like to put it at the start of a chain as it gives a really nice loud boost and you can make some really nice changes with the presence and bass knobs. My most recent recording I just used this into a blue box into a delay as a simple feedback loop to back my channel of contact mic'd stuff.
  • Good Points: Loud harmonic boosts and good response from tweaking!
  • Bad Points: Power location and size is annoying

  • ......Ebay strikes again, I got this sucker super cheap 6 bucks the shipping was more than the pedal. I've found this pedal to be somewhere between a Metal zone and a Deathmetal. It's harsh as hell but doesn't have the bite that the famous distortions have. I love the presence knob on this thing ,it can get me some piercing highs and some decent lows. I can get better lows from the deathmetal than I can from this pedal. Over all it's a hell of a deal for the price I paid. It's a strong distortion with a few surprises in her. I don't think it'll ever be my number one , but it works well a little farther back in the loop. Keep your eye on Ebay for this one, I think they usually go for 15-25 bucks so you really can't lose.
  • Good Points: solid DOD construction strong distortion the presence knob?!?!?! plays well with others
  • Bad Points: those stupid DOD power adaptors other than that nothing i can think of!

  • the super american metal is leaps and bounds better than the original, pretty harsh sounds and rumbly bass, that can go to squeeling highs in notime flat, another decent dod distortion, and you can pick them up cheap on ebay, if you need extra crunch and already have a death metal, pick up this baby instead...
  • Good Points: nasty, grumbly bass, screeching highs, solid dod metal case cheap!
  • Bad Points: the usual dod problems...

  • Decent enough metallic distortion, but not really outstanding compared to other units. What really makes it worthwhile is the "presence" control, cranking it all the way up on the one I had caused all sorts of squealing noises, even without anything plugged into it. Still, I never got much use out of it, never found a place for it with the other effects and unloaded it about two years ago in favor of the Boss Metal Zone and Hyper Fuzz. As stated previously it can be a good choice for someone looking for something other than the "standard" noise distortions.
  • Good Points: presence control, cheap alternative to other distortion pedals
  • Bad Points: distortion itself is rather average

  • I'm so glad I found one of these on Ebay!! A nice turbo-charged version on DOD's American Metal pedal, this add's a BASS function onto the original. With the BASS all the way up and the PRESCENCE (essentially the Mids) all the way down, you get a nice 'scooped eq' effect. But then turn the Prescence up for some raunchy feedback!! I can only imagine if a HIGH eq was put on this as well (circuit-bending perhaps?!). Seems to give life to weaker distortions too. All-around great pedal for the noise arsenal.
  • Good Points: solid DOD construction, extra BASS feature to increase eq possibilities, overall nice distortion unit (not as harsh as DOD's Death Metal pedal), great feedback!!!
  • Bad Points: none!
  • Price Paid: US$28.00

  • this a decently loud distortion that will get nice and rumbley ala the bass knob. i fed it back into iktself and got some great noises out of...again more rumbling. the presence knob adds some nice bite, and acts as a boost, though it dosnt seem as strong as my metal maniac. which is fine, i wouldnt want the clone of the same fx in the first place. deffinately a distortion worth your time...
  • Good Points: solid dod construction, and not as infamous as the grunge, death metal, or corrosion...so they sell for a decent price...
  • Bad Points: but they arent made anymore, and thats the only flaw...
