The Frostwave SpaceBeam is a theremin type instrument, using the reflection of an infra-red beam from the operator's hand. This results in a much more stable and reliable behavior.

  • Infrared theremin, NOT an FX box. The closer your hand gets to the electronic eyes, the higher the pitch. Switch switches between high and low ranges, as well as "glide" (slower pitch decay). Knobs for volume and sine/square. EXCELLENT CV controller...works amazingly well with my SH-101. Pitch control is constant, but still tough to control...but miles better than any opto-theremin out there. Since it's infrared, it works in nearly any light source. WoooOOOOoooo!
  • Good Points: *built like you could hammer nails with it (but don't try it) *good variety of sounds, even without external FX *amazing CV controller for analog synths *no antenna to knock over *cool shape/color *more reliable than light-controlled opto-theremins
  • Bad Points: *expensive, and now tough to find since Frostwave has stopped taking orders for ANYTHING :( *difficult control *limited range on high end...definite note stop once your hand gets so close

  • i am absolutely in love with this device. with out any effects, the sound is mind blowing. fantastic tone, amazing pitch range & nice flow. THEN i hooked up my dd5 and it went ballistic. a distortion or two will bring out some mind-searing noise. also, this beast is rock-solid. "a tank" is right.
  • Good Points: dealing directly with frostwave was a pleasure, great feedback before and after shipping/ arrival of the product, quick response times. they were polite and eager to answer my questions.

  • The Frostwave sounds little like a normal theramin, but don't hold that against it. You control the tone with your hand like a regular theramin but the volume is controlled either by the knob, or a seperately purchased volume pedal hooked to the out put of the spacebeam. It's got pretty accurate control and sounds great run through a korg kaoss pad or delay effects.
  • Good Points: Built very sturdy, if you order from the frostwave site they will send you a power supply that works for it from a place in NYC. You also get the two year warranty which is nice, because nowhere else offers that. It has great tone and it can get very loud and dirty. I haven't tried it on a monosynth yet. It's a great toy to play with... and i swear it sounds like something straight from some of the earlier panasonic albums. It's probably just a similar occilator sound that's pretty typical.
  • Bad Points: The manual is a one page sheet of paper that tells you hardly anything. For example i don't understand what the gate function does. I thought it would work as a filter or something if you ran something through it and would be controllable like the theramin is. I wish they had built a infrared volume control on it too, to make it feel and sound a little more like a real theramin.

  • Very well built! A tank! It is very precise but just after a few moments i got the hang of it's controls and began to creat some keen motifs. The CV control is really cool. I have an SH-101 and it controls it like a champ!
  • Good Points: Construction is SOLID. The Knobs and switches are built for abuse. Plenty of room for stickers on the casing!
  • Bad Points: Still trying to find one......

  • today i received in the mail the frostwave spacebeam. a theremin-type effect that uses infra-red instead of an antenna. this thing is amazing. first, its an instrument by itself. with an easy to use set-up. you have the wave knob, which controls the wave pattern and the volume knob, which controls the output volume. it also includes two switches. glide switch, which changes of the tones sound(it can be smooth sounding or broken down sounding. and the range switch, which changes the pitch and range of the tones. yo can also run it thru a mixer which has a effects loop. plug it in there and you can manipulate your noise with the spacebeam. as for sound. it has a great palate of tones. you can do great big dives or get really low rumbles out of this thing. and if you run it thru different effects you can create some really interesting stuff. i highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for those kinds of pedals that are in a league of their own.
  • Good Points: easy to use, simple lay-out of pedal, compact, amazing sound, infinte possibilties.
  • Bad Points: none yet
