Korg Kaoss Pad KP2

Korg Kaoss Pad KP2

The concept of the Korg Kaoss Pad KP2 is brilliantly simple - as you move your finger around the pad you are controlling many sophisticated aspects of a powerful effects processor. Move your finger left to right and you control certain aspects of the sound. Move it up and down and you control other parameters. Make an arc and you bring in even more changes. All you need to do is glide across or tap on the pad to make evocative changes to your mix, producing a level of complexity that would be impossible to achieve with any other system or controller.

  • I have had one of these for about a year now and find it an excellent live tool. I use it as a looper live for quick synth pads. Its a bit difficult to get the loops dead on, but with practice its a great unit for that. The delays are great but I personally dislike the reverbs in this unit and find the drum loops/synths close to unusable. they may be right up someone elses ally, but not mine. The fact that there is just RCA outs (plus a headphone out) is a bit of an annoyance, but at least there is the option for either RCA or 1/4 in. The fact that there are a total of 3 input sets (1/4 instrument and RCA pairs) makes it quite flexible for running multiple units into it.
  • Good Points: great routing capability visually interesting for live performances bonehead simple to use
  • Bad Points: only RCA outs

synths and drum loops are less than stellar

  • I've had one of these for quite a long time. Eventually the "record" button on the sampling panel started to die out, but other than that it has put up with a ton of abuse. It's very useful, although the "synth" patches are pretty cheesy.
  • Good Points: Saves presets. Sounds good. Mostly very durable.
  • Bad Points: 1/4" mic input. RCA inputs designed for DJ use are, frankly, annoying. Buttons give out over time and heavy use. Tap tempo is useless. Input level functionality is a bit difficult to use at times.
