Maestro Echoplex EP-3

Maestro Echoplex EP-3

The Maestro Echoplex was one of the earliest, and neatest effects generators there will ever be. A long tape cassette runs in a loop over recording and play-back heads. The space you set between these points determines the length of the delay time.

  • This thing must weigh 27 pounds.I haven't unscrewed the inner metal box to clean it so it started to smell when turned on (dust, greese on hot parts). It has no on/off switch.I had to replace the tape loop cartridge and found another 5 minute one for .When making a hell of a lot of noise live the subtlety of 'cool tape compression' is not noticeable. The moving of the tapehead back & forth makes a very rich & undigital worble. The outer box is made of some kind of pressboard, which is rotting away.It was given to me by a dear friend about 20 years ago.

  • Ummm...OK. If you ever plan on trying something out in a closed feedback loop at Guitar Ceneter on Airport Highway, get prepared to get some weird looks from the Bullet For My Valentine-loving employees there. There was one of these in the "vintage" section, so I finally got try it out the way I wanted after some cajoling and the aforementioned weird looks. I just patched one of the inputs back into one of the outputs and rocked. Definitely a powerful device, although its sound has pretty much already been capitalized on by Noel Harmonson of Comets On Fire fame. I didn't get totry it with any other pedals, but I can imagine it would pretty much obliterate any incoming signals if used properly.
  • Good Points: Very unique sound Much more interactive and fun than other delay devices Fucking huge and ugly looking (a plus in my book)
  • Bad Points: Tapes wear out fairly quickly and are expensive The damned thing itself is pretty damned expensive Fucking heavy The sound is kind of too noticeable now thanks to Comets On Fire It will make you hate Guitar Center employees and their suspicious glances.

  • This is the best tape delay there is hands down. Some people rave about the tube ones and they do sound really nice, but I've found the differences to not be worth the hype/price difference.
  • Good Points: Sounds fucking awesome!
  • Bad Points: It is mechanically chanlenged. The motors can burn out and replacements are hard to find. Also, make sure to keep an eye on the tape, I usually take the plastic over off before turn it on to help "guide" the tape with my finger. Otherwize I have seen it "eat" tapes.
