The Phlnjr is a flanger box with an amazing modulation section. All of the modulation waveforms can be synchronized to the sound input. The "Type" switch controls the type of flanging effect, the "Beat Tap" switch controls the tempo, the "Center" knob controls the range of frequencies affected, the "Rate" knob controls the speed of the oscillations, and the "Depth" knob controls the amount of modulation.

  • I picked this unit up last week at Sam Ash for .99 brand new. I like this little box although i've heard some better flangers. I like the through zero mode for that finger on the tape flange sound. The pattern modulation mode is my favorite, i run 60hz through it on pattern mode and tweak the knobs and you get this rhythmic pattern going and hit the reset mod button to change the pattern. All in all there are better flangers out there but i paid .99 and i can't complain.
  • Good Points: Price Pattern Modulation Mode Tap Tempo
  • Bad Points: Wall Wart Power Supply
  • Price Paid: US$20.00

  • I disagree with the prior reviews. The different modes do what they're supposed to do, it's just not as distinguishable with dirtier sounds before or after it. Excellent stereo operation, especially with stereo ins and outs. Not overbearing like many Flangers. This is a great effect to punch in and out for adding some stereo movement and tweakage.
  • Good Points: Good stereo operation. Able to be subtle, yet effective.
  • Bad Points: Digital sounding.
  • Price Paid: US$39.00

  • exactly what the others said about the flangers sounding similar is all true. though i do like the bottom two since ive been able to coax some more thin sounds out of it than the others. its saving grace is all the time based stuff on the right. uncertainty gets nice and chaotic, and of course the tap tempo is fun indeed, yeilding some nice rhythmic elements. not the cure all for flange, and not as good as the phaze, but at the current price, it isnt bad...
  • Good Points: no loss of volume, and some interesting time fx... nice rubberized knobs...
  • Bad Points: deffinately buit for the table top... all the flanger choices sound more or less the same...

  • Exactly what K. said in the previous review. Most of the flangers all sound very similar although I'm sure musically they may stick out a little more. The best part is when you select a waveform with tap tempo. Bring the speed down to it's lowest, tap the tempo button as fast as you can, then slowly turn the speed knob up. Very fast! I wish all flangers were this fast! The input trim knob is very useful if the signal gets too hot. Another bonus is the fact that it has stereo inputs AND outputs. Great news for all you pedalnoise freaks.
  • Good Points: The knobs have a really nice feel to them. Can cycle through the various flanger effects+waveforms quickly unlike some digital effects have a short lag time.
  • Bad Points: Stupid name.

  • Could they have thought of a name any more stupid than "PHLNGR"? Controls for 'center', 'regeneration', 'rate', and 'depth', pretty standard flanger sound, though there are a variety of flanger 'types' to choose (stereo, contrary stereo, async stereo, through zero, and deep mono). Still all fairly similar sounding. The modulation section does add a bit more variety, 'uncertainty' being a completely random, chaotic waveform and the most interesting of the six types available. Nice thing about the ModFX series is they have both stereo inputs and outputs, and an input trim on the back. Couple of people have mentioned the plastic construction, but the top and sides of the case are plastic while the back and bottom are a heavy gauge metal (aluminum most likely), which does give the unit a quite solid feel.
  • Good Points: modulation section w/ six selectable waveform types, about the size of an average pedal, stereo inputs and outputs
  • Bad Points: five flanger types all sound fairly similar
  • Price Paid: US$75.00
