FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor RNC1773

The Really Nice Compressor (RNC) is a compact, affordable stereo compressor with a high-fidelity audio path and compression scheme. Don't be deceived by the sub-0 price tag; the RNC is a serious studio tool that easily competes with compressors five times its price. The RNC achieves such high performance at a low cost by using evolutionary advances in digital technology, coupled with the best analog has to offer. Using digital controls and an all-analog signal path, the RNC offers accurate, precise controls and a clean tonal character.

  • Did not work for me at all. The digitally controlled analog VCA, just kept introducing digital glitches. Seemed fine on traditional style music, but for noise or simple low freq material, it destroyed, I guess if found cheap enough the digital artifacts could be useful... starts to sound like a ring mod at some settings with simple sine wave sent to it. This thing is just junk, after talking to FMR they admitted it does have problems handling low frequency material... So these are known problems.
  • Good Points: pretty good for vocals and Pop/rock music, I guess.
  • Bad Points: Horrid for anything experimental, those digital artifacts;/glitches can just kill a track, I'd be afraid to use it for recording live... maybe.

  • Two words: Oh Yeah! or Thank you!--take your pick. For the price this is a top-of-the-line pedal like compressor. Even the raunchiest noise sometimes needs to be recorded and a compressor is mighty useful. Has a sidechain so that with EQ you can compress only the band(s) of noise that you want. This is cool and the RNC does a super job (I use a Behringer PEQ to select the bands). Can be used as a very good tremolo when coupled tremolo. Blows my cheaper DBX MC-6 out of the water. Easy to setup a reverse-noise effect for percussive thrashes. If you enjoy walls of sound ducking when you yell into a mike, well, that's what compressors were made to do. The RNC has survived being dropped on the floor twice from over 1m <ouch, sorry> and tossed in/out of gig bags. As the saying goes: you can never have enough compressors, even for... noise. :-)
  • Good Points: It can feedback into itself for a mega squash, due to two individual channels. Quiet enough. THe circuit is analogue, only the controls are digital. See their website. Can easily distort. Offers lots of boost. Has pro features and good, precise settings--as far as that goes for analog knobs.
  • Bad Points: No on/off switch; needs to be powered down. No batteries: AC power supply--"not DC and don't you forget it" or "how to fry a[nother] DC pedal in one easy lesson".
