Ibanez Black Noise BN5

Ibanez Black Noise BN5

Lethal, rough-edged industrial distortion at its most extreme-the sound of a small amp overdriven way past the limits. Ibanez's heaviest, most intense, and just plain loudest distortion pedal.

  • Bought it yesterday on an outlet as "another rare stamp in my collection". I am a little bit disappointet of the name "Black Noise" and the result. I think, the sound is a little bit too thin. the sustain is good but the distortion dont has the sawtooth to make it a real harsh noise pedal. I think, i can rebuilt it easily and give it the required balls.
  • Good Points: - easy to clone :) - in my suggestion a rare "stamp"
  • Bad Points: - plastic - not enough "balls" - flimsy and imprecise knobs - no real sawtooth - onetrickpony - too expensive for my own

  • The Black Noise is another one of those elusive soundtank pedals that will cost you more than you should pay if you buy it on ebay. Luckily i got this one in a lot with a few other pedals. The Ibanez Soundtank line unfortunately produced some of the most lackluster distortions there are, it's really no wonder they didn't continue the names into newer pedals (except of course for the ever present tube screamer). The only one i reccomend usually is the thrashmetal. But if oyur a distortion junkie, and you can find it cheap, it's an o.k. set and forget pedal. Typical synthy tones in a FBL, but the sound is a little darker than most others. All in all, if your looking for an awesome distortion, look under DOD. they got some great ones.
  • Good Points: i got it in a lot with 4 other pedals so it was resonably cheap. the tone section gets really dark, just the distortion setting is real weak.
  • Bad Points: all plastic enclosure, dodgy switch.

  • Wasn't too impressed with this product when I first got it, and got rid of it soon after. Your basic, albiet noisy, distortion box. The DOD death metal or grunge pedals will give you way more range and tonal possibilties than this piece of shite. You may find one used somewhere and pick it up to play with, but I assure you, you won't play/own it long!
  • Good Points: nothing come to mind...
  • Bad Points: cheap plastic 'tank' contruction, only three knobs (you know what they are!!), knobs are too small and flimsy
  • Price Paid: US$30.00

  • sort-of sludgy sounding dirty distortion. fair amount of gain, though not as much as the name suggests. mostly dark bassy tones or trebbly sizzle, not much in between.
  • Good Points: different-sounding dark-toned distortion, inexpensive, small size
  • Bad Points: misleading name, shoddy construction, tough to find
  • Price Paid: US$55.00
