King Capitol Punishment Utopia Synth

King Capitol Punishment Utopia Synth

The Utopia Synth from King Capitol Punishment consists of four square wave oscillators grouped into two sets. Within each set one is the modulator and the other is a modulated (main) oscillator. Each main oscillator has two range selector switches affecting the pitch sweep range. Chaotic inter-modulation between the oscillator pairs create deep exploding sideband frequencies. The Utopia Synth delivers a versatile and wide ranging tapestry of sounds from harmonic bliss to cacophonic terror. Get ready to unleash super huge dreamy drones or drastic painful nightmares of absolute noise, all with the flick of a switch. Its 1/4-inch mono output with master volume control may be fed to a mixer, amp, effects pedals, etc. Operates on an external 9-volt DC power adaptor only. The rugged and professional construction of the Utopia Synth is backed by a 2-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and failure of any mechanical components damaged during normal use. Operates only with a standard 9-volt negative tip barrel type 9-volt DC power adapter.

  • This is always in my live set up. I've had this for over a year and I'm still finding new sounds. There is so much to this little green box, but it is what you make it. I've read people complaining about the lack of drone possibilities, but just have to do some experimenting; you can't just crank it all the time.
  • Good Points: Unbelievable variety of sound.
  • Bad Points: zero

  • This is no ordinary "I'll get it and have it's nuances worked out within an hour" pedal. This is a brand new sound element to your set up. I can't imagine any noise musician NOT being able to find a use for this thing. Some have said that it's all harsh and no smooth (which most of us want anyway), but with just the two oscillators running together there are a lot of drone possibilites in this thing. Put it through a multi FX and you've got a device that could conceivably drive an entire live set. Construction seems solid, but the left most switch on the bottom oscillator of mine sometimes gets pushed just slightly to the right and remains on even when switched off. I'm used to preventing this with a leftward motion, but it's a hassle nonetheless.
  • Good Points: NOISY, unique conversation starting pedal, capable of a lot with the right tweaking, more of a new instrument than some random distortion or what have you.
  • Bad Points: The switch on mine drifts and cancels itself out, learning curve.

  • I love this little item, bought it via noisefx.com and these guys did a great job delivering it overseas - it literally took few days only. As for Utopia Synth itself, this is exactly THE item I had lacked in my setup - noisy even without distortion, with variety of sounds, and very durable. Recommended hands down.
  • Good Points: - great sound - chaotic interference between oscillatior 1 and 2 creating awesome noises - easy to use - small, portable and durable
  • Bad Points: - yes, not enough droney sounds

  • It's harsh alone, and vicious with a little distortion, gain, and so on.
  • Good Points: Simple setup, pretty paint job, soundscapes galore to be found. Great for use inside a feedback loop (with the help of a Y cable) to really spice things up and add some texture. Can get pretty loud.
  • Bad Points: Not as many sounds as one could imagine...but good enough. No battery.
