The Yamaha Hardist DI-03 is a distortion pedal that generates its gain through a hard-clipping circuit, producing a compressed, aggressive distortion character. Its primary controls include Drive, which sets the amount of distortion by increasing the input gain into the clipping stage, and Level, which adjusts the output volume to balance the effected signal against the bypassed dry signal. A Tone control shapes the high-frequency content, allowing the user to darken or brighten the distorted sound. The pedal operates in mono, with a standard input and output jack, and is powered by a 9V battery or an external DC adapter. When engaged, the effect replaces the dry signal entirely rather than mixing it, and the bypass switch routes the clean guitar signal directly to the output when the effect is off.
