  • i had this thing for a while. i didn't really like it. it was too difficult to edit samples and sequencing on it isn't that great. i wasn't that into the fx either. kind of blah to me. but i have heard great results from it.
  • Good Points: i have heard people do amazing things with this sampler. so i guess it isn't what you got its how you use it.
  • Bad Points: editing(trimming, truncating, and adjusting) samples is difficult. sequencer is so so. fx bland to me.

  • A very important part of my set-up.I used this unit as intended in sampling industrial noises and sounds.. the patches I've stored so far are more than sufficient sound sources with different and varied tonal qualities. You can play multiple samples, but the effects can only be applied one at a time..not that you will be using them a lot..they are rather weak and not very usable in a full blast noise production. The lo-fi function is a particular favorite..it manages to make some of my samples sound raw and gritty..can make the convulsive twitchings of broken power tools and machines more pronounced..thus offering much potential for further processing..it forces you to be creative because you'll be directly responsible for the conceived "quality" of stored sounds. In the manual, you could easily tell that this is directly marketed to "sequencer loving doojooks"..but ignore the idea and look at it as a unit that is capable of storing your most unique and individual sounds, with easy access to them..unless you want to do some more involved programming. Storage using memory cards is definitely a plus..shame it can not run on batteries like the SP-202;..would've been ideal for some field recordings..but overall,a very useful device in the production of your "own" sounds
  • Good Points: -small footprint;well built -easy interface;great lights! -storage with memory cards
  • Bad Points: -can not run on batteries -digital sounding at most times -rather useless effects..(at least for noise)

  • I haven't had this thing long, but its so far proving to be an excellent machine. The effects can make even the cheesy presets sound quite nasty and when you create your own samples you can really make some evil sound. Its light and easy to use and good probably the best for its price range.
  • Good Points: lots of fx and possibilites to tweak sounds or totally annihilate them. Well built and light Affordable! (or more so than most)
  • Bad Points: Low sampling time Mark/end sample editing can be tricky Some processes can appear quite complicated for someone new to sampling (such as myself! hah)

  • I absolutely love this machine. I have a bunch of old samplers, and I actually like the lo-fi out of this more than all my other samplers. The effects are great mainly because they are not great, but you can really bend sounds up with this. Give yourself 20 minutes with this thing, and you'l understand how to use it..
  • Good Points: Easy to use, Great Sound, Resampling lets you add as many effects as you wish. Lo-Fi is a BEAST, sample your drums, and re-sample em on this to create truly unique sounds. I use this with my MPC, basically threw my ASR-X out the window. And you can manually modulate the samples with the knobs. I haven't tried to record the knobs via midi..
  • Bad Points: Ok, and the bad part. You have a 32 meg card, but you can only store 32 sounds.. even if those 32 sounds are small, and take, lets say 2 megs. SO you have 30 megs of unused space that you can't use. i would have loved to store all my drums on this thing.. I would have sold all my other samplers if this was possible. Also, you can't normalize samples, and you edit the start and end points with a 'mark' button that can be kinda annoying. Hit 'mark' where you want to start, and 'mark' where you want it to stop. Sounds easy enough eh? What about those really really short samples...

  • I am a Theatrical Sound Designer. In my lifetime of doing this, I have used everything from reel to reel tape, to cassettes to keyboards, to CDs. The SP-303 is the ideal solution. Just press a button and the CD quality effect runs. I build the effect in my computer and load it to the media chip and then transfer it to the 303.
  • Good Points: Easy to load effects. High quality sound. Midi interface to computer or other controller. Sound re-sampling for both parameter and effects.
  • Bad Points: extremely low, almost nonexistant internal memory, making the first 16 positions - banks A & B almost useless for my needs. No simple way to stop an effect from playing once the button is pressed.

  • a guy in my band has the 202 so i decided to pick one up but before i buy i like to do a little research so i ended up with this one. far far more versitile than the 202. many onbard effects. easy to use. good sound quality. small. with a few media cards you can have endless smaples. i could not perform without it.
  • Good Points: easy as hell to use. the option of resampling after the sample was effected and re-effected is amazing. mutations galore.
  • Bad Points: what bad points?

  • A step up from the SP-202, still 8 pads to assign samples to, X 4 banks for a total of 32 samples (with a smart media card, which is not included), the same reverse, loop, record and edit fuctions, but with a bit more. First and foremost on influencing my decision to purchase is the ability to play eight samples simultaneously, double the number of the 202, which is convenient if you have a base sample, say a loop, and you're going crazy punching other pads... w/ the 202 hitting that fifth pad would knock out the first, and if that's a base sound over which everything else is layered you're screwed, at least momentarily, not so much a worry w/ the 303. 21 different effects are also available, most being total crap and can only be used one at a time, although the unit does allow unlimited resampling with effects, so it's pretty easy to destroy the original source, it just may take a bit of time and patience. The 303 is A/C powered only, which makes it much more compact, but doesn't allow for using it to make field recordings, though I don't see this as a drawback. This isn't a high-end sampler, and wasn't designed as one, internal memory is very limited unless you record using the lo-fi option, so pick up a memory card if sound quality is an issue. I use it for it's basic abillity to record, store, and play back sound, certainly beats using multiple CD/MD walkmans or tape loops for the same results.
  • Good Points: playback of 8 samples simultaneously, resample w/ effects, more compact than SP-202.
  • Bad Points: most of the onboard effects are crappy, can only use one effect at a time
