DOD Overdrive Preamp FX50

DOD Overdrive Preamp FX50

Sounds good for your basic distortion/overdrive sound. The tone is very warm. Distortion level doesn't vary much when you turn the drive knob before the boost setting.

  • This is an amazing "sleeper" pedal. It is very warm sounding and the preamp/overdrive is very smooth. This pedal is very tube screamer..ish. But I actually like it better for the warmth. It has definately found a permanent place on my pedal board.
  • Good Points: Warm, smooth, excellent for mild to moderate gain. Think SRV/bluesy. Dirt cheap, but that might change. Sounds excellent with a strat. I've yet to give it a go with my les paul.
  • Bad Points: Not true bypass, but it has a decent buffer. Can get a bit thin when turning the distortion knob past say 2 O'Clock but I just don't use it for distortion, it is a preamp after all.

  • As a preamp it doesn't do much, and the overdrive it adds is a very thin midrange grittiness, like a distant AM station. Due to this it's not very versatile, though it can help a signal cut through a murky mix. It's pretty bland, though a signal with lots of high peaks will be turned into an ear-shattering static assault.
  • Good Points: Battery seems to last a long time.
  • Bad Points: Doesn't do anything the volume and tone controls on an amp can do. Really thin distortion gives it limited appeal.
