Trogotronic 665

Trogotronic 665

The Trogotronic Model 665 Subterranean Analog Artifact Explorer: ideally suited for expeditions into the realm of analog higher-order thresholds whose existence is poorly addressed (more often forgotten completely) in the algorithms that math stooges write for large audio electronics firms who seek to capture real life analog circuits in stale equations computed by cheap microprocessors. Turbulent, complex and unstable areas of analog sound difficult to navigate let alone discover with even the most sophisticated and expensive analog synthesis gear are readily accessed with a twist of this eight-knobber. Sharp, ragged and searing solos tones; horrifying torturous particle blasts and soothing lengthy Venusian jungle bird calls that cycle lazily (with a bit of fine tuning exploration).

With an interface that is simple and concise but a range that spans great heights and depths, the 665 also transforms and modulates sounds that are sent through it.

  • The troglodytes talk about subterranean audio- wouldn't that be

the low end of the audio spectrum? Nevertheless this box's

specialty is the high end, and does produce sonic signatures I've

captured by nothing else. But it's maybe a three or four trick pony,

with a nice amount of variations within each. I can't really tell you

what's going on here guts-wise, as the proprietors keep the

explanation of circuits to a bare minimum. Indeed the one sheet

instruction manual doesn't seem to jive with what's going on, but

that's probably my ignorance- or maybe not. I do like it but sad to

say, they've recently discontinued this from their line. They didn't

build many of these- a few hundred- so it will be collectable soon.
  • Good Points: Well built, both the metal or plastic enclosure. An interesting palette

    of somewhat limited sounds.
  • Bad Points: Why the mystery as to what's going on here? The one sheet manual

says there's one oscillator- doesn't sound like one only. But a more

    detailed explanation would've been appreciated.
