The Super Hard-On is the perfect preamp pedal. The "Crackle Okay" volume knob is a negative-feedback control styled after classic 60's recording console inputs. (They crackled when adjusted too.) The ouput level can exceed 8 volts peak, and when it finally distorts, the wave is shaped like triode overload, not fuzz. It's so transparent no one will be able to tell you're using a pedal, because it simply makes your signal bigger and pushes the amp harder, causing natural overload. This sound can be the solution to the 'disappearing signal' effect you get sometimes on stage when you stomp on your distortion and sound weaker. When cranked, it sounds much louder than a fuzz or distortion.

  • I would say to try this in front of any old pedal. the amount of gain that you can whip up will make old distortions act like compressors, octave pedals roar and delays/reverbs howl. Just turn it up WAY too much.
  • Good Points: Adds a beautiful edgy clarity to just about anything. I can't track without it. Try it on drummachines and keys as well.
  • Bad Points: Mine use to blow the transistors up until sent back and modded by the kind folks at zvex. The new ones don't exhibit this problem. It is quite pricey for a boost.

  • Well, there isn't really much to say about the Super Hard-On. Having played with one before I built a clone for myself, I can say that this pedal isn't really too useful for noise. It does color up the SNB sound a little but thats about it. Basically all it did was bring out some of the frequencies that weren't normally heard coming from the SNB when its on one of it's wilder settings.
  • Good Points: 2 outputs, can't go wrong with that. Simplicity.
  • Bad Points: Since it's real application is for a guitar with a tube amp, it's a great pedal. For noise, I wouldn't bother unless you want to color up your sound slightly.

  • What's it do - clean boost. nothing more. doesn't colour your sound at all. It's your sound but more of it. The Crackle ok is basically a volume knob. It crackles a bit when you move it - z vex says its based on old Mixing desks. Anyway you don't move it too much its on so who cares.
  • Good Points: Clean boost. Nothing else and lots of volume increase.
  • Bad Points: Only these things are too pretty to take out. The paint chips easily. My only other gripe was battery only - but z vex has fixed that.
